The Waterfront Promenade is much more than a sidewalk along the water, it is part of what makes Baltimore unique.
Covering seven miles of shoreline on one of America's premier urban bodies of water, it connects historic communities, such as Fells Point and Federal Hill, to modern downtown and Harborplace. The many faces of Baltimore's character are revealed and explained through community markers and scattered fact plaques covering many historical, cultural, architectural, environmental and social histories. People of all ages have the opportunity to recreate, sightsee and relax in the green spaces of Canton and Fort McHenry or shop in downtown Inner Harbor or Little Italy. The Baltimore Waterfront Promenade is a great benefit to tourists as well as residents. Once complete, with a comprehensive sign system, it will be an unique asset that continues the maritime traditions of this great seaport city and brings the nature of Baltimore's waterfront alive. It will provide visitors a way to tour the entire harbor, visiting many historical sites, along one continuous route. The route can be taken by land on the Waterfront Promenade or by sea on water transportation provided. Providing these transportation links by land and by sea serves to help create a world class heritage tourism destination in the heart of Baltimore.
