Peabody Jazz Combos
The Peabody Jazz Department is committed to presenting jazz through community engagement, student empowerment, and pedagogical foundations. Our Peabody Jazz Combos present student performances of jazz classics and original compositions under the direction of our world-renowned Peabody Jazz faculty. This show will present 2 ensembles under the direction of esteemed professors Nasar Abadey and Tim Green. Donations to our website directly or the Keystone Go-Fund-Me strongly encouraged. This is a FREE show, but you will still need a ticket to attend!
"Echoes of Soul" A Tribute to The S.O.S. Band & Atlantic Starr featuring Julie Ennis
Atlantic Starr was one of the most successful soul bands of the 80s and early 90s, with a basketful of memorable songs including "Always", "Secret Lovers", "Circles", "Silver Shadow", and "Masterpiece". The S.O.S. Band is an R&B and electro-funk group who also gained fame in the 80s. They are best known for their songs "Take Your Time," "Tell Me If You Still Care," and “The Finest.” Julie Hawkins Ennis is a powerhouse vocalist whose musical roots run deep in the soul of Southern Maryland. After college, Julie began recording under Paul Minor’s guidance as well as that of legendary R&B artist Al Johnson of The Unifics. Under Minor’s development, she was positioned to become a featured female solo act under Verdine White of Earth, Wind & Fire with EMI. From Southern Maryland roots to East Coast stages, Julie “Juliet” Hawkins Ennis remains a dynamic voice shaped by passion, heritage, and a lifelong devotion to music.

Mike Phillips at Keystone Korner
Soulful contemporary jazz saxophonist Mike Phillips is known as one of the most electrifying instrumentalists today. Mike is the first musician signed by Michael Jordan to the Nike Jordan Brand, home of the Air Jordan, and is the only musician in the world to have recorded and toured with the legendary “Big Three” of American soul and pop music: Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder, not only as a member of the band, but as a featured soloist. Mike Phillips has played three halftime NFL shows with various artists and served as Music Director for the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration for two consecutive years. Phillips also served as Musical Director and Host of the popular BET program “Lyric Café”.

Groove Stu is deeply rooted in the timeless traditions of soul, funk, and R&B, while fearlessly carving out their own unique path in the contemporary music scene. Channeling influences from iconic acts such as D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire, Prince, and Mint Condition, Groove Stu brings back the art of real vocals and live instrumentation. Groove Stu has shared stages with legendary acts such as Frankie Beverly and Maze, Boyz II Men, Erykah Badu, Mint Condition, Eric Roberson, Raheem DeVaughn, and Kindred the Family Soul, solidifying their reputation as a dynamic live act. They were also nominated for the 2024 SoulTracks Readers Choice Award for Duo or Group of the Year.

The David Bach Consort
David Bach is one of the hardest working jazz keyboardists/pianists in the region with a long list of awards, accolades and credits from nearly 30 years as a professional musician and bandleader. Over the years, David has recorded and toured the world as a solo artist and a sideman for several major artists including Enrique Iglesias, Thievery Corporation, Fishbelly Black, and has recorded with Everything But the Girl and the Basement Boys. He is a recipient of the 2019 Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame and the winner of Maryland Music Awards “Best Jazz Artist” in 2016. His most recent album, Fierce Heart, reached #33 on the 2020 RMR Top Jazz Albums of the Year and remained on the charts for 20 weeks. His band, The David Bach Consort was the winner of the Jazz Discovery Showcase on BET/Viacom which led to millions of people being exposed to David’s exciting music.

She is a virtuoso, she is expressive, spontaneous and with a grace that makes her the favorite of all of us.” — Chucho Valdés Yilian Cañizares is one of the most intriguing contemporary violinists, singers and composers. Always staying true to her origins, she skillfully blends jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban rhythms with her otherworldly voice. Whether on stage or in a recording studio, there are few talented artists like Yilian – who was born in Havana and settled in Switzerland – with such great respect for the past and sensitivity towards the future. In recent years, she has shared a stage with Chucho Valdés, Richard Bona, Ibrahim Maalouf, Omar Sosa, Youn Sun Nah, Michael League, Harold Lopez Nussa, Roberto Fonseca and Dhafer Youssef.

UMBC Jazz Ensemble Presents: Excursions!
The UMBC Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Matt Belzer is a large jazz group dedicated to the professional training and creative development of its members. Throughout the year, the group performs at concerts, special events and festivals. They have performed with numerous guest artists including Nicole Mitchell, Allison Miller, Jonathan Barber, Howard Johnson, Ben Allison, Steven Bernstein, and Larry Willis. This concert will feature new works composed and arranged by students. The Chuck Redd Quartet with Mike LeDonne
Chuck Redd, vibes Mike LeDonne, piano Blake Meister, bass Quincy Phillips, drums Chuck Redd is well known internationally as a performer on drums and vibraphone. Chuck began recording and touring the globe when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21. For two consecutive years, Chuck was awarded “Best Vibist” in New York City’s Hot House Jazz Magazine 2015 and 2016 Fans Decision award. To his credit are 25 European tours, six tours of Japan, and being featured on over 80 recordings. Chuck is the 2019 musical director of The Oregon Festival of American Music.

Ayomilekan Akinbinu, Guitar & Alto Saxophone Kofi Boateng, Keyboard & Trumpet Lucas Hanson, Keyboard Imran Musa, Bass Adeolu Opadina, Drums Hailing from Laurel, Maryland, Sade's Collective blends R&B with the complex rhythms of highlife and the soulful improvisation of jazz. Born from jam sessions in a lead guitarist’s basement, the band’s name is a tribute to those collaborative beginnings, with "Sade" honoring the host and "Collective" representing their shared musical vision. Their sound is a unique fusion that feels both spontaneous and nostalgic, creating a vibrant tapestry of intricate grooves and rich melodies. Think Tony Allen meets the Vanguard — a sound that respects tradition while pushing it into new, exciting territory. Sades Collective is currently in the studio, crafting their debut music to share their fresh take on jazz with a wider audience.

Fran Vielma’s Pan American Jazz Orchestra Celebrates International Jazz Day with Special Guests this April 30th! Fran Vielma’s Pan American Jazz Orchestra premiered in 2021 to showcase contemporary jazz through the musics of Pan-America—a historic blend that began in the 19th century in New Orleans, shaped profoundly by the Afro-Caribbean diaspora and greatly influenced by the Haitian Revolution.

Known for her crossover mix of smooth jazz, fusion, pop, and new age music, Japan's Keiko Matsui is an internationally acclaimed pianist and composer. Emerging in the late '80s, Matsui has issued 27 albums over the decades including 1989's Under Northern Lights, 1995's chart-topping Sapphire, 2016's Journey to the Heart, and 2023’s Euphoria, that displayed a grasp of both Western and Eastern musical traditions and her love of nature and spirituality. She’s collaborated with the likes of Gregoire Maret, Kirk Whalum, Marcus Miller, Lalah Hathaway, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Bob James, Jackiem Joyner, Gerald Albright, Akira Jimbo and more. She’s received many awards over the years, including Billboard Magazine naming her the #1 contemporary Jazz Independent Artist of the year (1996), being ranked as the #3 best-selling contemporary jazz artist of the year (1998), and was the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards “Female Artist of the Year" (2000 & 2001). The Furious Bongos - Music of Frank Zappa
The Furious Bongos are a Frank Zappa tribute band and incredibly maintain this level of excellence, a nine-piece combo of remarkable ability. The Furious Bongos are a dynamic and precise ensemble playing with an outstanding bravura, multi-faceted vocal delivery upfront. The group describes this venture as “not a strictly tribute project,” but more of a unique band you won’t find anywhere else. The result of their approach is a show that pays respect to Zappa’s legacy, but is also new, different, dangerous and fun, with lots of eyebrows. Kinda like Frank.

Marcus Johnson is returning with friends to Keystone Korner Baltimore on May 17th! Keyboardist and bandleader Marcus Johnson mans the boundaries between smooth jazz and modern R&B. To date, Marcus has released more than fifteen Billboard charted CDs, and has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) Anthology, which consisted of three distinct CDs -- FLO Chill, FLO Romance and FLO Standards - all chart Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously. As head of Three Keys Music, Johnson produced and released on the Three Keys Music label national jazz artists: Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams, neo-soul songstress Zahzarah; and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair.

Corinthia has been known to astound audiences with her skillful and passionate performances as a gospel, jazz, and R&B saxophonist, vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and band leader. Cromwell has performed on stage and in concert with some of the music industry’s most notable artists to include Kirk Whalum, Wayman Tisdale, Wynton Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, Marion Meadows, Maysa Leak, Maurette Brown-Clark, The Clark Sisters, Tramaine Hawkins, and Richard Smallwood, just to name a few. A two-time Grammy Award winner known for his bass voice and romantic image, his greatest success came in the 1970s as a solo singer and with the Love Unlimited Orchestra, crafting many enduring soul, funk, and disco songs such as his two biggest hits: "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "You're the First, the Last, My Everything". Gerald Levert was an American singer-songwriter and producer. Levert was best known for singing with his brother, Sean Levert, and friend Marc Gordon of the R&B vocal group, LeVert. Levert was also a of the R&B group Black Men United and a member of LSG, a supergroup comprising Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, and himself. Levert was the son of Eddie Levert and lead singer of the R&B/soul vocal group the O'Jays. He released nine solo albums, six as a member of LeVert, two with his father, and two as a member of LSG. Levert was also part of the R&B group Black Men United. Keith Sweat is an American singer and songwriter. An early figure in the new jack swing musical movement.

Sarah was featured in the first-ever class of NPR Jazz Night in America’s Youngbloods alongside Samara Joy, Immanuel Wilkins, Isaiah J. Thompson, and Sean Mason. In 2025, Hanahan was named DownBeat’s #1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist and ranked #9 overall alto saxophonist in the DownBeat Readers Poll—placing her alongside legends such as Kenny Garrett and Gary Bartz and further cementing her status as one of the leading voices of her generation. Sarah has had the privilege of studying and working with many renowned musicians including Jeff “Tain” Watts, Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Peter Martin, Emmet Cohen, Steve Davis, Billy Hart, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Drummond, Marc Cary, and has toured with Joe Farnsworth, Peter Martin, Ulysses Owens Jr. & Generation Y, and Sherrie Miracle & the Diva Orchestra. He started out as a street artist years ago, serenading the streets of Maryland and DC, but he is still going out in the streets to perform for the people who can’t afford to buy tickets to his concerts.

Charles Funn & The Funn Band Celebrates The Music of Black Jazz Composers Pioneering composers like Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Eubie Blake, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong and Mary Lou Williams created enduring standards and helped define the genre of jazz. They fundamentally shaped American music, blending innovation with tradition to break social barriers. Essential figures include Billy Strayhorn, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins, driving Bebop, Swing, and Modern jazz. Today were celebrate and honor these luminaries. Charles Funn, a graduate of Morgan Stage College is a retired band instructor (44 years) with the BCPSS. In addition to being a music instructor, he was and is a practicing professional musician having played behind and with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Gladys Knight, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Dells, Clark terry, Dizzy Gillespie, The Morgan State university Concert & Jazz Bands and The Howard University Jazz Ensemble.

Cummings to converse on her extraordinary personal journey in the US military and her triumphant effort to honor her predecessors with the Congressional Gold Medal in her new book, A Soldier’s Life: A Black Woman’s Rise from Army Brat to Six Triple Eight Champion. This memoir chronicles Cummings’s unlikely but successful path to leadership roles in the army and afterward, tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the Six Triple Eight—a trailblazing African American World War II Women’s Army Corps unit now the subject of a Netflix film and a Broadway-bound musical—and the grassroots campaign Cummings led to honor them. A book signing will take place after the talk.

Greg Hatza ORGANization
Greg Hatza, organ Peter Fraize, saxophone Brian Kooken, guitar Robert Shahid, drums In 1994, Greg met Joey DeFranscesco who told him the Hammond B-3 was enjoying a popular renaissance. He formed the Greg Hatza ORGANization and has been performing and recording on the instrument non-stop since that time. With the trend towards more advanced electronic keyboard and rhythms now, Greg adapted to the trend, switching from the Hammond B-3 to the electric keyboard and piano. In the late sixties, Baltimore was still an organ town and had its share of great players. It was here that Greg really got a chance to hone his jazz organ skills by playing with the best musicians in town. Lenny’s club was a great stopping point for national jazz artists who came to Baltimore to perform. He also met and got to play in jam sessions with such personalities as Kenny Burrell, Groove Holmes, Damita Joe, Philly Joe Jones, Roland Kirk, Les McCann, James Moody, and Sonny Stitt.

He brings together the sounds of jazz infused with his deep gospel roots. He currently tours with the multiple Grammy-nominated group, “The Baylor Project. Terry has recently served as Music Consultant and actor/performer for the off-Broadway production of “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill” at Baltimore Center Stage. Terry has composed, arranged, and recorded music for a diverse group of artists such as Adam Blackstone, The Baylor Project, Stephanie Mills, Jason Nelson, and Shirley Caesar. He is the recipient of several awards, including Downbeat Magazine, NAACP ACT-SO, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He is a proud husband and the father of 6 children.

Noah Pierre is a Baltimore-based guitar player who has played behind artists such as Jarrod Lawson, Ron Holloway, MegaGoneFree, Micah Robinson, and others. With Noah Pierre Band, he has performed at the Maryland Music Awards in 2024 and was featuring in WBAL-TV's Holiday Special in December 2024.

One of the great jazz guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has the unique ability to play with the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent, overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Stern revered all three of those guitar immortals, along with such potent blues guitarists as Albert and B.B. King. Aspects of those seminal influences can be heard in his playing on the 18 recordings he has released as a leader or in his acclaimed sideman work for Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, the Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Steps Ahead, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Joe Henderson and the all-star Four Generations of Miles band.

Greg Hatza, organ Peter Fraize, saxophone Brian Kooken, guitar Robert Shahid, drums In 1994, Greg met Joey DeFranscesco who told him the Hammond B-3 was enjoying a popular renaissance. He formed the Greg Hatza ORGANization and has been performing and recording on the instrument non-stop since that time. With the trend towards more advanced electronic keyboard and rhythms now, Greg adapted to the trend, switching from the Hammond B-3 to the electric keyboard and piano.
